  • Gendered Justice
    Barbara E. Bloom, Editor

    Addressing Female Offenders

    Gendered Justice addresses the complex questions that arise regarding justice-involved women and criminal justice policy. It raises serious questions about current criminal justice policy and practice which ignore gender, as well as practices that have been widely accepted by mainstream criminologists, policy makers, and practitioners, without regard for their implications for women and girls. Bloom discusses the special circumstances faced by females in the system and the "equal treatment" tradition that has guided criminal law and practice for the past century and has generated the phenomenon known as "vengeful equity." The book challenges mainstream policies of "gender neutrality" in terms of their implications for women and girls in conflict with the law. With the dramatic rise of women and girls in the criminal justice system, gender-based issues are now receiving attention in the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, and elsewhere.

  • Toolkit: Meeting the Needs of Women in California's County Justice Systems
    Barbara E. Bloom

    Because fewer women are convicted of crimes and incarcerated compared to men, they can be overlooked for what may be ideal approaches to reduce crime and recidivism. Meeting the Needs of Women in California's County Justice Systems describes how counties can benefit from developing criminal justice solutions focused on women. It is designed to provide sheriff’s departments, probation departments, practitioners and other leaders with a blueprint for addressing women under local supervision.

    The goals of this toolkit are to:

    • Ensure that local justice systems are more gender-responsive and that women and their specific needs are not overlooked as decision-makers implement new policies and practices in a changing criminal justice landscape;
    • Enable county justice systems to take full advantage of significant new state and federal funding streams available to implement rehabilitative alternatives to jail incarceration;
    • Help safely reduce counties’ reliance on incarceration through implementing less restrictive alternatives and developing strategies to better manage female jail populations; and
    • Provide information on research-based, community-based programs.

    The toolkit is authored by Dr. Barbara Bloom, a professor in the Department of Criminology and Criminal Justice Studies at Sonoma State University, as well as co-director of the Center for Gender & Justice. To download the toolkit, click here.

  • A Young Man's Guide to Self-Mastery
    [COVINGTON, S. and RODRIGUEZ, R. (2021). HOBOKEN, NJ: WILEY]

    This 14-session program addresses the unique needs of adolescent boys and young men between the ages of 12 and 18.  Boys live in a world that is complicated as they attempt to navigate their psychological and physical development.  The typical adolescent male is caught up in a maelstrom of hormonal, social, and cultural shifts that would be difficult to deal with even in ideal conditions.  Chances of atypical or disordered development increase exponentially in the midst of troubling experiences. In fact, for many young men, typical male socialization can be characterized as a series of traumatic events.  Boys who suffer adverse or troubling life events also experience significant impairment in neural development. This can lead to trouble in critical thinking, trouble in reconciling emotional events, and antisocial behavior.

    This program focuses on the effects of adversity and trauma on the lives of young men and is designed to help them to mitigate some of those effects, such as abuse of alcohol and other drugs. The techniques incorporated in this curriculum are meant to create an atmosphere of safety and of mutual learning. Some of the topics included are: cyber-bullying, substance misuse, emotional development, process of trauma and what it means to be a man in today’s world.

  • Exploring Trauma+: Brief Intervention for Men and Gender-Diverse People (2nd Edition)
    [Covington, S., Pugh, S., and Rodriguez, R. (2016, rev 2021). Center City, MN: Hazelden Publishing]

    This newly revised evidence-based six-session trauma intervention is designed for people who have experienced abuse and trauma.  Our understanding of gender has shifted from the binary male-female model to a more inclusive and expansive model. This second edition of Exploring Trauma is now entitled Exploring Trauma+: A Brief Intervention for Men and Gender-Diverse People in order to reflect the changes in this new edition. We have expanded the definition of gender responsive to include the experiences of transgender and nonbinary people.  This new material has inclusive pronouns, as well as examples of traumatic events and focus questions specific to this group.

    The materials focus on the three core things that both staff and clients need: an understanding of what trauma is, its process, and its impact on both the inner self (thoughts, feelings, beliefs, values) and the outer self (behavior and relationships). With a deepening understanding of the impact of trauma, clinicians are beginning to recognize specific issues for men, trans and nonbinary people.  These include the silence that surrounds men's abuse, the impact of male socialization on someone’s response to abuse, the risk of victims becoming victimizers, and the need to understand fear and shame. This material can also be used for training staff on the gender-responsive issues related to trauma.

    The facilitator's guide and participant's workbook are on a flash drive which allows for easy duplication.  The workbook is written in both English and Spanish.  There is introductory material on trauma for the facilitator and then detailed instructions (specific lesson plans) for the sessions.  It is particularly designed for settings requiring a brief intervention, such as jails, community corrections, and addiction treatment programs.

    [Covington, S. and Russo, R. (2011, rev. 2016 and 2021). Center City, MN: Hazelden Publishing]

    This newly revised third edition of Healing Trauma is now entitled Healing Trauma+: A Brief Intervention for Women and Gender-Diverse People.  Our understanding of gender has shifted from the binary male-female model to a more inclusive and expansive model. In order to reflect these changes, the definition of gender responsive has been expanded to include the experiences of transgender and nonbinary people. This new material has inclusive pronouns, as well as examples of traumatic events and focus questions specific to this group.

    The materials focus on the three core things that both staff and clients need to know: an understanding of what trauma is, its process, and its impact on both the inner self (thoughts, feelings, beliefs, values) and the outer self (behavior and relationships).  The session topics include: the process of trauma, power and abuse, grounding and self-soothing, and healthy relationships.  There is a strong emphasis on grounding skills.

    Healing Trauma+ is an evidence-based program and an adaptation of the best-selling Beyond Trauma: A Healing Journey for Women. It is particularly designed for settings requiring a shorter intervention: jails, domestic violence agencies, and sexual assault services.  The facilitator's guide and participant's workbook are on a flash drive which allows for easy duplication.  The workbook is written in both English and Spanish.  There is introductory material on trauma for the facilitator and then detailed instructions (specific lesson plans) for the sessions.

  • Helping Men Recover: A Program for Treating Addiction
    [Covington, S., Griffin, R., and Dauer, R. (2011). Hoboken, NJ: Wiley]

    Helping Men Recover is the first gender-responsive, trauma-informed treatment program for men. The materials are grounded in research, theory, and clinical practice and include a facilitator’s guide and a participant’s workbook. This is the men’s version of the widely used, evidence-based women’s curriculum, Helping Women Recover. This curriculum addresses what is often missing in prevailing treatment modes: a clear understanding of the impact of male socialization on the recovery process, a consideration of the relational needs of men, and a focus on the issues of abuse and trauma. The Helping Men Recover Facilitator’s Guide for the 18 session program is a step-by-step manual containing the theory, structure, and content needed for running groups. The participant’s workbook allows men to process and record the therapeutic experience. The program model is organized into four modules that emphasize the core areas of men’s recovery: self, relationships, sexuality, and spirituality. The materials are designed to be user-friendly and self-instructive. This allows the Helping Men Recover program to be implemented by a staff with a wide range of training and experience.

    A Man's Workbook offers a companion product that is tied seamlessly to the Helping Men Recover Facilitator's Guide. This participant workbook has four modules (self, relationships, sexuality, and spirituality) and allows men to process and record the therapeutic experience. It contains exercises for use in group sessions, summaries of information presented from the facilitator's guide, and reflection questions and activities for use after group sessions.

  • Hidden Healers: The Unexpected Ways Women in Prison Help Each Other Survive
    [Covington, S. (2024). Hoboken, NJ: Wiley]

    With unflinching clarify, Hidden Healers cuts through the myths about incarcerated women to expose the all-to-real brutalities they face within a criminal legal system never designed for them.  Backed by three decades' experience providing therapeutic programs inside prisons across the United States, trauma specialist Dr. Stephanie S. Covington has used her unique access to amplify the voices of the women themselves.  Their stories illuminate realities most never see:  That most women who get caught up in the criminal justice system have themselves been victims of harm, that the degradations of today's prisons and jails only magnify their trauma – and that the incarcerated women regularly risk punishment to tend to one another's wellbeing in unexpected acts of kindness.  Grounded in research and rich with personal narrative, Hidden Healers in a poignant and riveting look inside women's prisons and jails – and what we can do to help.

    Advance Praise for Hidden Healers

    After working in the criminal legal system for over 25 years as a Criminologist, I’ve studied, read, and written numerous publications about this system and the people under its care. Hidden Healers is a very moving and personal account of Dr. Covington’s journey with this system and the people behind its walls--both those who can leave and those who cannot. This book challenges terminology within the field of criminology. It challenges how we think and feel about the legal system, punishment, and rehabilitation. It most definitely challenges us to contemplate the human beings who rely on the system that is in place in the U.S. Incarcerated women become something more than subjects in these pages: they become people once more. Dr. Covington brings attention to the realities of daily life in prison and the research that supports the recommendations for change.  She debunks the stereotypes with such clarity that you cannot pretend you don’t get it! If you are interested in learning about incarcerated women, or teaching on this topic, then you MUST read Hidden Healers. I am grateful for the opportunity to continue to learn about things I claim to be an expert on. – Dr. Nena Messina, Criminologist, UCLA (ret.), President and CEO, Envisioning Justice Solutions, Inc., Simi Valley, California

    This is a brilliant and rattling study of women’s journeys into imprisonment, their stories of abuse and pathways into crime often borne of psychological trauma, their unnecessary degradation and humiliation upon arrival in prison, and the ongoing pain of the daily grind of imprisonment. Yet it is also a story of women’s survival and support for one another.   This is a study and story of real importance in which Stephanie Covington captures the different ways in which women transform their lives against the odds and help to heal one another. The great strength of this book is that Covington ‘tells it like it is’.   It is a unique and inspiring effort, addressed to a broad spectrum of readers. – Professor Dr Loraine Gelsthorpe, Institute of Criminology, University of Cambridge, UK
